On the Hamakua Coast, two courses share a base in Honomu. The Kolekole Waterfall Zipline Adventure runs seven lines past 250-foot Kolekole Falls and ends with a crossing over a 450-foot ravine. Zip N' Dip takes the same falls a step further: its seventh line glides right over them, then you spend up to two hours in a private waterfall pool. Farther up the coast in Hakalau, Umauma's nine-line course covers two miles, with four dual lines, a 2,000-foot zip over the river and falls, and a 200-foot suspension bridge above a gorge and lava tube.
North Kohala is the closest zipline area to the west-side resorts. Kohala Zipline checks in at the old yellow Kohala Sugar Co. building in Hawi, then flies five lines and two sky bridges through private forest, with Hawaii's only tree-mounted spiral staircase and views across the channel to Maui. Its all-day Kohala Zip & Dip adds lunch at a coastal overlook and a waterfall swim. On Wednesdays, guests can also join a giveback session planting native species on the land.
Not everyone in your group has to zip. You can hike to Kolekole Falls on a private farm, drive an ATV around the Umauma property, or walk the Umauma gardens on your own to see the three-tiered falls.
Zip N' Dip is the one that flies directly over a waterfall: its last line crosses above 250-foot Kolekole Falls. The Kolekole Waterfall Zipline Adventure flies past the same falls, and Umauma's course includes a 2,000-foot line over the Umauma River and its falls. Kohala Zipline approaches a waterfall by zipline and sky bridge.
Umauma takes the youngest riders, from age 4 and 35 pounds. Kohala Zipline starts at age 8. At the two Honomu courses, children who weigh 40 to 69 pounds ride tandem with a certified guide (on the Kolekole course, for the last three lines), so weight matters more than age there.
Umauma has the widest range, 35 to 275 pounds. The Kolekole Waterfall Zipline Adventure allows 40 to 260 pounds, and Zip N' Dip allows 70 to 260 for solo riders. Kohala Zipline's range is 70 to 270 pounds. The Honomu courses check weight at check-in, so book with your real weight.
The New Kohala Zipline Adventure is the lowest-priced zipline at $155. The Kolekole course starts at $220 and Umauma's nine lines at $249. Full-day zip and waterfall swim combos run from $295 to $320. Prices change, so the Book Now button always shows today's rate.
Kohala Zipline in Hawi is the closest: about 60 minutes from Kailua-Kona, 40 minutes from the Waikoloa resorts and 35 minutes from Waimea. The Hamakua Coast courses are on the Hilo side of the island. If you're staying near Waikoloa, Umauma's nine-line package includes round-trip transportation.
Yes. The Hamakua Coast courses run rain or shine and provide or lend rain gear, and Kohala Zipline includes rain gear with every tour. Rain is common on the Hamakua Coast, and it's what keeps the waterfalls flowing. Operators only cancel when the weather turns unsafe. Wear closed-toe shoes that cover your toes and heels; sneakers or hiking boots work best, and sandals, Crocs or Chacos aren't allowed. Pants, capris or knee-length shorts are the most comfortable under a harness. Bring a swimsuit and towel for any tour with a swim.
